Miley Cyrus: What’s your take?
Society: People are not to be judged. Everyone is equal.
Society: No, this is wrong. That is wrong. Why don’t you work out? You are so fat. You are so ugly. Why do you do this? No, this is not how we do things.
Miley Cyrus was a teen sensation for girl teenagers all over the world when she herself was just a 15 year old. She started out as Hannah Montana on Disney channel and then later rose to fame with her singing ability and acting. Of late every person has heard of the recent ‘stunts’ of the 21 year old. Every picture of hers that has been uploaded on any social networking sites carries comments ranging from her fans showing love and care for her to people using expletives and saying what a bad image she has created for herself and then the fans retorting and saying ‘ No hate for Miley’. Well if one uses the internet they sure are bound to come across such arguments.
Every society has certain rules or norms that are expected to be followed. Now, you can be the 1 among the 100 people who go on a different road and do things that are not acceptable /considered morally RIGHT in society. To prove my point, our Indian society finds that live- in relationships are a big no-no, although some people in recent times have started adjusting with this new generation and their outlook. However in other societies live-in relationships are way too normal and are not looked down upon. So every person has his point of view because of the morals and values he/she has been taught and thus judges someone’s actions, which leads to such conflicting views about Cyrus’s antics.
Accusing someone is a very easy task. Most people don’t even try to place themselves in that person’s shoes and conveniently criticise the person. In light of the performance given by Cyrus at the VMA’s and her music videos, it does not seem appropriate because society has told us that what she does is morally wrong! Apart from her behaviour is anyone even aware that she has been named the most charitable celebrity recently? How active she is for a number of charities and that she gives performances for them and to raise money? No. Because everyone sees her recent behaviour and don’t know that she can be a good person at heart. Moreover everyone needs to be reminded that she is just out of the teenager club and is a young adult. Everyone does mistakes when they are in their teens! The sole difference is that because Cyrus is a celebrity, her movements and everyday activities are tracked. Imagine our situation if someone pries into our lives and makes it Page 1 news about all our embarrassing and cringe-worthy actions?
Point to be noted, I’m not saying that Cyrus should not be blamed and what she does is not wrong. Everyone is entitled to their own views. And everyone should be allowed to live the way they want to.
To sum up what I want to say, I can’t say whether what Cyrus does is wrong or right. I believe that every person has a story and reason for the way they behave and act. So judging them and forming opinions about them is wrong, you don’t know them! But yes, everyone has their own ‘acceptance’ standards and morals and can form opinions about her. Maybe she will grow up and get a reality check but that is something we don’t know. So for the time being I think that Miley is a good and talented singer, as a person she has the free will to do what she deems fit, but that is her way of life. So we can stop being so judgemental and maybe give her a break? Your choice. And as the saying goes, “Live and let live.” She is a human after all. Isn’t she?
